Longtime Vergas resident Barbara Ann "Barb" Goodman, 75, passed away at her home on Tuesday, February 4, 2014, under the care of her family and Red River Valley Hospice, following a courageous battle against cancer.

A memorial service for Barb will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 1, in the Vergas Event Center, with a time of visitation from 1 p.m. until the start of services. Furey Funeral Home, Vergas, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. To leave online condolences, please visit

Barb was born to John and Martha (Rienets) Townsley on April 26, 1938 in Cass County. In 1944, the family made their home in San Francisco, Calif., where Barb attended and graduated from Mission High School. She then went on to attend Mission Beauty School.

In 1958 Barb returned to Vergas, and worked for her aunt, Pauline, at My Ladies Beauty Shop in Detroit Lakes. Barb met Ronald Goodman at the Detroit Lakes bowling alley. The couple was married December 13, 1959, in Detroit Lakes. They made their home on Wymer Lake, where they raised six children.

Ron and Barb bought both grocery stores in Vergas in 1974. Goodman's Grocery remains in operation today.

Barb also enjoyed sharing her time and talents and was the first beautician to volunteer at the Frazee Care Center. She also enjoyed snowmobiling, bowling, volleyball, knitting and sewing. She belonged to the Heart of Lakes VFW Ladies Auxiliary, was a charter member of the Vergas Lioness Club, now the Vergas Lions, was a member of the Vergas Homemakers Group and was also a member of the Frazee and Vergas United Methodist Church.

Barb will be dearly missed by her husband of 54 years, Ron Goodman of Vergas; six children, Scott Goodman of Vergas, Craig (Keri) Goodman of Vergas, David (Angie) Goodman of Frazee, Theresa Harthun of Vergas, Kathy (Doug) Goodman of Vergas and Jeff (Marla) McClanahan of Texas; 22 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Karen (Louie) Buitrago of California; sister-in-law, Kathy Townsley of California; two aunts; along with many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Barb in death were her parents; brother, Gene Townsley; and several aunts and uncles.
