Barnesville downs Frazee in girls' basketball
The Barnesville Trojans finished the first half with a 10-2 run to take a five-point halftime lead en route to a 45-34 victory over the Frazee Lady Hornets Tuesday night in a Heart O'Lakes conference basketball matchup in Barnesville.
"For the first 15 minutes of the game we played at our pace," head coach Dave Conzemius said. "But in the last three minutes of the first half, their press turned us over a few times and we started to force things a little bit, which is what they like to make you do. You have to credit Barnesville for forcing their tempo on us at the end of the half."
The Trojans (9-7 overall, 6-6 HOL) led at the half 21-16 and had a nice run to start the second half, pushing the lead to 13 points at 34-21.
Just when it appeared Barnesville would pull away, freshmen Alexis Tappe scored five quick points for Frazee (4-12 overall, 3-9 HOL) to bring the Lady Hornets back into the game.
Frazee had several chances to cut into the lead further at this time, as the Lady Hornet defense held the Trojans at bay, but the team was unable to get the key shot to drop to sustain the run.
From this point, the defense of both teams remained solid, as baskets were tough to come by. Barnesville was able to hang on for the win.
"We played a very nice game defensively, but we gave up way too many offensive rebounds and had too many turnovers that would have allowed us more chances to score," Conzemius said.
Tappe led the Lady Hornets with a game-high 15 points. McKinzie Tangen added seven points.
Barnesville was led by Brooke Meyer with 13 points.
"We need to be able to learn from the make mistakes we made and get better," Conzemius added. "If we can limit the mistakes and become better fundamentally, we should be able to win some games down the stretch."
Frazee is back in action on Friday when the teams travel to Ulen-Hitterdal for a girl/boy doubleheader.
