Basketball: Lady Hornets come up with two big wins
After a good week of practice, the Frazee Lady Hornets hit the road last week for two games and came away with two impressive wins.
On Thursday, they exacted some revenge on Perham with a 69-58 over the Yellowjackets.
Then on Friday, Frazee built an early big lead over Menahga and cruised to a 53-44 over the Braves.
Solid team effort keys win over Perham
Earlier in the season, Perham came to Frazee and went home with a 53-42 win. In the rematch on Thursday, the Lady Hornets came out focused and determined as they came up with a big road victory.
“The girls were really focused for this game and they wanted to come out and play better than the first game against Perham,” head coach Dave Conzemius said. “As a result, we came out and played one of our best halves of the season in the first half.
The Lady Hornets led at halftime 36-22 and pushed the lead to 19 points early in the second half before Perham made a run.
The Yellowjackets trimmed the lead to six points a few times but Frazee was able to answer always with a basket to keep their lead.
Josi Tappe led Frazee with 22 points and five steals. Taylor Tappe added 13 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, Kennady Barlund had 11 points and nine rebounds and Whitney Janu had her best game of the season with 10 points.
“This is a great win for our team over a good Perham team,” Conzemius added. “We really needed this one and the kids came and played like we did. It was fun to watch us play with intensity for the entire game.”
Early lead keys win over Menahga
One night after their big win over Perham, the Lady Hornets started slow against the Braves.
But a strong finish in the first half and a quick start to the second half proved to be the difference in the Lady Hornet win.
Frazee was struggling to get things going in the first half, but Barlund keyed Frazee with 11 first half points as the Lady Hornets took a 37-16 lead at halftime.
Frazee started the second half with an 8-2 run to push the lead to 27 points before Menahga made a run to make the final score closer as Frazee struggled the last 10 minutes of the game.
Barlund led in scoring with 14 points to go with five rebounds. Hailee Oswald added 12 points. Josi Tappe had team highs in rebounds with 11 and steals with five. Taylor Tappe had seven points, seven rebounds and four assists.
“We got a little complacent and allowed them to make a nice comeback,” Conzemius said. “It is a tough to come out and well play well two nights in a row. We can be a good team if we play a complete 36 minutes with focus and I think we are starting to figure that out.
“We are excited for the remainder of the season and upcoming playoffs.”
Frazee now sits with a 12-11 record and will be back in action on Monday, Feb. 24 when they travel to Ulen-Hitterdal and Tuesday, they will travel to Hawley.
