A four-run inning in the Detroit Lakes Softball Invitational Saturday salvaged one win for the Lakers, who finished fourth in the eight-team tournament.

The Lakers went 1-2 on the day, which was highlighted by a 4-2 victory over Lake Park-Audubon in the opening round. They then suffered losses to West Fargo 11-1 and Moorhead in the bronze game, 18-4.

There was one facet of DL's game which was not present -- offense -- as the team produced only 15 hits on the day.

"We've been batting strong all season, but not this weekend," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. "We did have some good pitching, but we needed all three aspects -- pitching, defense and batting -- to be on."

The Lakers were able to overcome a 2-0 deficit to the Raiders in the tourney opener with a four-run fifth, which was keyed by four hits.

Back-to-back singles by Heather Ianiro and Cady Cartmell sparked the fifth-inning rally, as Jalen Even added a one-out single to load the bases.

Consecutive walks issued to catcher Brianna Seebold and shortstop Shayna Dugger tied the game, with designated hitter Amalea Branden coming up with a clutch two-run single to double up the Raiders.

DL senior pitcher Callea Butz was on for most of the game, allowing LP-A's two runs in the third on a Chelsey Raaen two-run triple, which scored Taran Schoeberl and Cheyanne Nelson.

But Butz would stiffen up by not allowing another hit the remainder of the game and finishing by throwing a complete-game two-hitter, along with three walks and a dozen strikeouts.

"Callea threw strikes and that was the key," Kirchner said.

LP-A senior pitcher Christine McIntire also had a solid game, limiting DL to seven spread out hits.

Branden and Ianiro each had two hits in the game.

Cartmell struggled in the semifinal game against West Fargo, with six walks in the first three innings of work.

West Fargo also had some solid hitters, as they went for six timely hits in the 11-1 victory.

"West Fargo pounded the ball and our bats were stagnant," Kirchner said.

DL managed just three hits, with Seebold picking up an RBI on a fielder's choice in the fifth, scoring Donna Wicker.

The errors piled up in the third-place game against Moorhead, as DL booted five balls, leading to 11 unearned runs in the 18-4 loss.

The Spuds rolled out to a 10-0 advantage after the second inning, after accumulating six hits and taking advantage of three DL errors.

Moorhead finished with 14 hits off of Butz, while the DL pitcher had five walks and five strikeouts.

The Lakers had a total of five hits, with Dugger claiming a two-run double in the third.

"There was a lack of focus because of the long day, but the girls have to maintain their hustle and give their 100 percent all the time," Kirchner said.

The Lakers dropped to 3-4 overall and are 2-0 in the Mid-State Conference.

Brainerd defeated West Fargo in the title game by the score of 7-1.

DL will host Pequot Lakes Friday at 4 p.m. for a conference doubleheader.
