Bats thrive in sweep over W-DC

Carolyn Kinney smacks a double Saturday against Fergus Falls. Kinney finished with a home run, a double and an RBI. DL NEWSPAPERS/Brian Basham

A slow start to the Detroit Lakes Invitational Saturday resulted in a sluggish overall beginning for the Laker softball team.

But the ending was much nicer, as the Lakers downed Fergus Falls 8-1 to pick up important QRF points for the section seeding process.

The Lakers (6-3) also gained a pair of wins in the Mid-State Conference standings with a sweep of visiting Wadena-Deer Creek Tuesday by the scores of 18-2 and 13-2.

After falling to two North Dakota teams in Valley City by the score of 11-1 and Shanley by 8-5, the Lakers rebounded with their win over Fergus Falls, which is the first time a DL team beat the Otters in over a dozen years.

“It’s been 12 years since we’ve beaten them, so that’s always nice,” said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. “Our bats came alive and Chaz Butz pitched the best game of the season.”

Butz allowed just three hits to the Otters, while the DL bats produced 12.

The Lakers rallied big in the third inning with five runs, keyed by five straight hits, including RBIs by Kyra Vagle, Hailey Sonstegard, Emily Schiltz and Brooke Olson.

That set the table for Butz to cuff the Fergus Falls’ bats and allow DL to ride to the victory.

“The big thing the girls played good defense (one error), we just need to be more consistent,” Kirchner said.

Schiltz carried the hot swing by going 3-4, while each of Carolyn Kinney, Sonstegard and Llecenia Burnside each had two.

Kinney also had a solo homerun in the fourth inning.

Seven runs by Valley City in the top of the first inning was too much to overcome for the Lakers in game one of the day, as the North Dakota team won 11-1 in five innings.

Butz had some control problems with four walks in the inning, as DL only had two hits.

“Valley City is a good team, but you can’t get in a hole like we did early,” Kirchner said.

Shanley scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead, then added insurance runs in the final two frames to win 8-5.

Emma Maguire was tagged with the loss, after giving up 12 hits.

“We only had two errors, but we didn’t make the plays out in the field, either,” Kirchner said.

“It’s mental mistakes like not hitting your cuts, which hurt us.”

The Lakers scored all their runs in the first two innings, as with Maycen Kirchner lacing a two-run double. Burnside also had a two-run single in the second inning to cap DL’s scoring.

DL had only two more hits in the final five innings.

The Lakers took a couple of positive steps forward in the Mid-State with a convincing sweep of Wadena-Deer Creek Tuesday.

Burnside ended game two in rocking fashion with a walk-off grand slam in the sixth inning to invoke the 10-run mercy rule 13-2.

Burnside went 3-4 in the win, while Schiltz maintained a nice stroke at the plate by going 2-4 with two RBIs.

“For a freshman, Emily is having a great season,” Kirchner said of Schiltz. “She is playing a difficult position at shortstop and is leading the team in hits and RBIs.”

In game one, DL exploded for five runs in the second, seven in the third and six in the fourth in the 18-2 win.

The Lakers had 19 hits, including three by each of Kinney, Vagle and Schiltz.

Kinney accumulated four RBIs, while Schiltz had six, including a three-run homer in the fourth.

Those having two hits apiece included Sonstegard, Olson, Katie Colsen and Burnside.

Butz picked up the win in game one, while Maguire won game two.

The Lakers will be in Perham Thursday at 4 p.m. for a conference doubleheader.
