But, firefighters were able to stop the spread of the second - on the 49400 block of Hubbard County Road 98 - and save the home.

The call for the fire on Dandelion Lane was made at 7:54 p.m. Tuesday.

The homeowner returned home and found the house on fire, according to Bemidji Fire Chief Dick Sathers.

Thirty Bemidji firefighters were on scene for three hours.

The house could not be saved and was a total loss, Sathers said.

The fire, while still under investigation, is believed to have been caused by unattended cooking. The second fire was reported at 4:27 a.m. Thursday.

The family in the residence woke up when the smoke detectors were going off, and all were able to make it out of the home safety, Sathers said.

Twenty-three Bemidji firefighters were on scene for about four hours.

The fire was contained to areas around the fireplace, which was in the center of the home, and the areas above it, Sathers said.

Rafters were damaged and the roof may have to be replaced, but the home still is habitable and most, if not all, of the family's belongings were saved, Sathers said.
