Bemidji man struck by vehicle while crossing street
A 72-year-old Bemidji man was listed in fair condition Wednesday after he was hit by a vehicle Monday afternoon while crossing Paul Bunyan Drive Northwest.
According to the Bemidji Police Department:
Calvin Carrol Rice was crossing Paul Bunyan toward the east side of Hannah Avenue Northwest at about 3:45 p.m.
Sam Paul Lalone, 19, of Bemidji was driving a 2003 Ford pickup south on Hannah when he preceded to turn left onto Paul Bunyan Drive to head east.
Rice was struck by the front of the Ford on the driver's side. He suffered a broken arm, broken ribs, head injuries and a possible broken ankle.
He was taken by Bemidji Ambulance to North Country Regional Hospital, which reported him in fair condition Wednesday afternoon.
Lalone told police that he did not see Rice, but heard a thump and immediately stopped the vehicle to render aid to Rice.
Witnesses reported that Lalone was not speeding or driving recklessly and likely had just not seen Rice crossing the street.
