Bender Family Chiropractic moves to north Washington Avenue -- Refurbishes former Ordinary Joe's building
Dr. Paul Bender, with the help of a variety of local craftsmen, has transformed the former Ordinary Joe's BBQ building into a state-of-the-art chiropractic office.
"We basically went down to the studs," explained Bender. "Only the exterior walls were left untouched during the remodel."
Previously located in the lower level of Detroit Lakes' Graystone Building, Bender Family Chiropractic relocated to the north end of Washington Avenue on April 3.
"We really liked our old location in the Graystone building, but this site offered more parking and a main level office," commented Dr. Bender.
He had come across his new location after thumbing through the local real estate guide one day.
"I had been casually looking for a new building for some time and this one really seemed ideal, so I called the listing agent and went from there," he said.
With twice the space, a designated parking lot, as well as room to grow, next up would be to renovate the old restaurant and reconfigure the space to suit its new chiropractic offices needs.
"We bought the building near the end of November and then spent the next few months remodeling and getting everything ready," explained Dr. Bender.
Local contractor Dave Munson was in charge of the extensive redo, which included new paint, flooring, wiring, HVAC upgrades and acoustic sound proofing.
"We gutted the building, with Dave doing the bulk of the work. He did the framing and finish work; Herzog Roofing the roof; Dow Acoustics provided sound proofing technologies; Hanks Heating HVAC work; and LaDue Construction was in charge of applying the special stucco on the outside of the building," Bender said.
Complete with new freshly painted offices space, wood-ceiling clad reception and waiting areas, and numerous therapy rooms, Bender Chiropractic is settling into its new location and looking forward to expansion opportunities.
"We really remodeled every part of the building and even included room for a massage therapist so we can continue to grow."
Dr. Bender has owned and operated Bender Family Chiropractic, previously Lakeland Chiropractic, since 2006 when he purchased the established chiropractic office from Dr. E. C. Lof.
"I worked with Dr. Lof for about a year before buying the practice," said Bender. "I knew it had lots of potential."
Bender, a graduate of Concordia College, Moorhead, received his graduate degree from Northwestern Health Sciences University, Bloomington, Minn.
"The new building has been great," Bender remarked. "The only snag in the move was waiting for the exterior construction to wrap up. All we needed was two days of above 50-degree weather to apply the special stucco aggregate. Who knew April would have none and snow to boot?"
