Nearly 800 people -- including Marjorie Berg and Jessica Burhans of Detroit Lakes -- attended an American Cancer Society Relay for Life Leadership Summit in Bloomington last month.

Berg has been involved with Relay for several years and is the event chair, and Burhans is new to the committee this year, and will be working with team communications.

The Relay For Life events are run by hundreds of hard-working, dedicated volunteers who raise vital funds for cancer patients.

"Our community is dedicated to helping further the American Cancer Society's vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays," said Berg.

The Relay brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups -- people from all walks of life, all aimed at celebrating the lives of those who have had cancer, remembering those lost, and fighting back against the disease.

Relay For Life events are held as individuals and teams gather at an athletic track, park or other area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at Relay.

"By raising more money and involving more people in Relay For Life, Becker County is enhancing its investment in the American Cancer Society's mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, helping them get well, by finding cures and by fighting back," Burhans said.

Information about how to form a team or become involved in Relay For Life is available from the American Cancer Society by calling 1-800-227-2345 or by visiting RelayForLife.org. Or you can call 841-5173.

The Relay For Life will be July 12 at the Detroit Lakes High School track.
