Berit Ramstad Skoyles: ‘Brisk’ temperatures are all right with columnist
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

Some may say the weather outside is brisk. Although it may be brisk, a better word could be used to describe how cold it actually is.

Frozen comes to mind. I have lost count of the number of times my ear lobes have been frozen in the last week. So much for my new Christmas earrings. My hands and feet? I bid farewell to toasty toes and fingers quite some time ago. Twenty below with a 50 below wind chill does leave the body a bit chilled.

With our current temperatures seemingly setting new records, we are freezing our butts off while trying to enjoy winter. Stepping outside for a mere five minutes requires layers upon layers of sweaters, coats, hats, mittens, warm pants and boots.

Call me crazy, but I actually enjoy this weather. No, not because of the school cancellations. I just like the cold. I like stepping outside and feeling that shiver run down my spine. After sweating through my year in Chile with temperatures that were perpetually above 50 degrees, the cold is a nice change.

One might say that it is too cold, but I would much rather have it be 50 below in the winter than 50 above. At least with the cold weather my lovely snow is staying where it should be — on the ground.

Of course, the snow could stand a little moisture to help it achieve the perfect consistency for snowball fights and snowmen, but with these brisk temperatures it doesn’t look like I’ll be bringing Frosty to life anytime soon.

Living in Minnesota, you would think that we’d be prepared for these types of conditions. Apparently my assumptions have been wrong. This past weekend gifted us with some pretty darn cold weather.

High school meets and games were cancelled as well as school.

I only slightly understand the cancellations of sporting events, but I don’t really understand the cancellation of all Minnesota schools. Sure, it was 20-something below zero outside, but as far as I remember, I don’t attend an outdoor school.

I thought maybe my day off would allow me to ski all day long, but alas, the cold weather kept even me inside. I wasn’t brave enough to put on my many layers and make my way to the trails.

I figured that with all my layers on, all I would be able to do was waddle my way across the trails on my skis.

Although that may have been entertaining for those watching, my brother and I decided to stay inside and enjoy the pleasures of beavers, Canadians and curling in the movie Men With Brooms instead.

A grueling battle for the Golden Broom is the perfect way to spend an extremely cold day.

As much as I enjoy this frigid winter, I wouldn’t object if the temperature was 10 degrees warmer. Ten below to 10 above is a nice temperature range. You may not agree, but to me, that weather would be perfect.
