Bernard Furey

Bernard J. "Barney" Furey, 86, retired Frazee funeral director, died Thursday, March 15, 2012 at the Frazee Care Center.

Friends may call between 3-7 p.m. Sunday, March 18, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a Parish Vigil at 7 p.m., all at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee. The visitation will continue one hour prior to Monday's mass at the church.

The mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 19 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee, with Father Xavier Ilango officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with Military Rites provided by Heart O'Lakes V.F.W Post 7702.

Bernard James Furey was born to John D. and Mary Louise (Auge) Furey on November 25, 1925 in St. Paul. He graduated from Willow River (Minn.) High School in 1943, and served with the U.S. Navy, 1943-46. Following his discharge, he attended the University of Minnesota College of Mortuary Science, graduating in 1951.

Barney was united in marriage to Katherine Tuttle, June 10, 1950 in Bruno, Minn. Following his graduation from the University of Minnesota, he worked as a mortician for Johnson Mortuary in Duluth, 1951-60 and for OI'Halloran & Murphy Funeral Home in St. Paul, 1960-63. In November 1963, Barney and Kay purchased the Miller Funeral Home in Frazee and changed the name to Furey Funeral Home, which they operated until 1994.

Barney was also instrumental in starting the Frazee Care Center during that time. Barney and Kay spent their retirement years in Frazee, where he enjoyed time with his family, being active in Sacred Heart Church, traveling, fishing and gardening. He was an honorary charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council in Frazee, the Vergas Lions Club and Heart O'Lakes V.F.W. Post 7702.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Kay of Frazee; three daughters, Kathy Furey of Minneapolis, Ann (Brent Gurtek) Doberstein of Duluth and Bernadette Furey of Cambridge, Minn.; five sons, Tom (Mary Kenning) Furey of Minneapolis, Joe (Susan) Furey of Clearwater, Minn. Jim (Heather) Furey of Apple Valley, Minn., Patrick (Sara) Furey of Frazee and Nick Furey of Virginia, Minn.; 30 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Thill of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Angeline Spindle of Sun City, Ariz.

Preceding him in death were his son, Paul; five brothers, Joseph, Jim, John, Raymond and Leonard; and three sisters, Patricia, Alice and Marie.
