Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 7, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church, rural Detroit Lakes.

A mass of Christian burial for Bernie is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, at St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church, with interment in the church cemetery.

Bernard Joseph Schmitt was born to Henry and Margaret (Dauer) Schmitt on September 29, 1936 in Kent, Minn. He was raised and educated near Fairmont, N.D., attending a one-room country school and later graduating from Fairmont High School. After school he worked at the feed plant in the O & M Elevator in Wahpeton, and worked his way up to manager.

On June 23, 1962, Bernie was united in marriage to Linda Boesen at St. John's Catholic Church in Wahpeton. Together they made their home in Breckenridge, Minn., and in 1973, they moved to the Cormorant lakes area. He later took classes and earned his master electrician license. For the next 33 years Bernie worked as a master electrician, working on and completing several building projects around the lakes area.

Throughout his career, Bernie was employed by Lakeland Electric and Rick's Electric. In 1984, he started "Bernie's Electric" and continued his own business until 1988.

Bernie retired in October of 1998. He spent his retirement years continuing his passion for hunting and fishing. He enjoyed woodworking, often taking his work to craft shows with his wife Linda, and he also enjoyed that occasional trip to the casino.

Bernie was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and loved spending time with his family and friends.

Bernie will be remembered and deeply missed by wife Linda of Detroit Lakes; children, Dawn (Bryan) Mischke of Lake Park, Curtis (Cynthia) Schmitt of Minneapolis, Craig (Sharon) Schmitt of Audubon and Tamara Schmitt of Moorhead. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren: Amanda (Wayne) Mischke, Tyrel (Melissa) Mischke, Mikieala Mischke, Kahrder Schmitt, Reagan Nudell, Kayleigh Nudell, Britney Ronning and Brian Anderson; along with nine great grandchildren; one brother, Robert (Jeanette) Schmitt of Wahpeton; and brother-in-law, Allan Schrieber of Breckenridge.

Preceding him in death were his parents and sister, Mary Francis Schrieber.
