Betty L. Scherer, 74, of Detroit Lakes, passed away peacefully at her daughter's home on Thursday, February 22, 2007, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Betty Lou Hulke was born to William and Lillian (Wesser) Hulke on Jan. 24, 1933 in Hinckley, Minn. On July 10, 1954 she married Eldred "Al" Scherer in Minneapolis. Betty and her husband owned two grocery stores in Richfield and Edina in the 1960s-70s. In 1976, they moved to Detroit Lakes. Betty was active in the Detroit Lakes Youth Hockey program, serving as a board member. She was employed by the school district in the food service until her retirement.

Betty loved to cook, bowl (she and Al won the Eagles Doubles Tournament) and golf, and wintered in McAllen, Texas, during retirement. Most of all, Betty loved her husband, children and grandchildren. She was a wonderful mother and wife.

Betty will be remembered and deeply missed by her beloved husband of 53 yrs, Eldred Scherer, and their six children; Cindy (Tom) Maag of Ramsey, Minn., David (Kathy) Scherer of Prior Lake, Minn., Beth (Paul) Renner of Detroit Lakes, Tom (Karon) Scherer of Sartell, Minn., Cathy Scherer of Bismarck, N.D., and Mark Scherer of St. Louis Park, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; one aunt, Gertrude Williams; and one cousin, Gloria Waisenan. Betty's parents preceded her in death.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25,, with a 7 p.m. prayer service to follow, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes. It will continue for one hour prior to the start of the mass on Monday.

A mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Interment will be held at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Detroit Lakes.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred sent to the Hospice of the Red River Valley in Detroit Lakes. The David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes is assisting the family with arrangements.
