Bid-opening for new LP-A high school Jan. 27
Bids will be opened for construction of the new Lake Park-Audubon High School at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27 in the theater at the high school in Lake Park.
LP-A School Board members set the bid opening at their organizational meeting Thursday.
The cost of constructing the new facility for grades 7-12 is expected to come in at "just shy of $18 million," said LP-A Superintendent Dale Hogie.
Architects from Zerr Berg have been working closely with construction manager Gehrtz Construction Services of Fargo to keep the cost of the project within that projected range, Hogie added.
"The architects have met several times with school representatives, including the principal, our chief maintenance person, technology coordinator and myself to discuss the layout of the individual rooms," he said.
After doing some revisions, the architects met with those individuals a second time.
"They wanted to provide the assurance that when this building is constructed, the spaces are laid out as they were intended," Hogie said.
Though the square footage of the design is "nearly identical" to what was proposed for the referendum last May, there have been numerous changes made in the specifics, he explained. to make the design as cost efficient as possible while still fulfilling the district's needs.
Some of the most noticeable changes have been to switch the school's main entrance from the east end of the building to the west end, and to switch the design of the building's southern face from a curved shape to a more conventional rectangular one.
"It's more cost effective," Hogie said of the change.
As for the remodeling and addition at the elementary school in Audubon, which started this fall, Hogie said that project is "moving along as expected."
Work on the project is "beginning to move more rapidly," Hogie said, because the two main construction areas to be completed during the school year are now enclosed and heated.
"All the work they had intended to have done through (the end of) the school year, it appears that will be done," Hogie said.
Once classes have ended in May, the only construction still left to be completed on the elementary facility will be the demolition of the old 1922 portion of the existing building, construction of a small addition on that site, and completion of the new parking lot.
They will also be installing new heating and ventilation systems for the existing classrooms, and then will do one final check "to make sure all systems are functioning properly," Hogie said.
Though the boilers for the new heating system at the elementary are now in place, he added, the district will continue to use the old heating system until next fall.
In other business at Thursday's organizational meeting, the board elected its officers for 2011.
Vicky Grondahl, Dale Binde and Mike McIntire were all re-elected to their positions as chair, vice chair and treasurer, respectively.
Because the board's 2010 clerk, Rick Ellsworth, is no longer on the board, Darrel Pederson was elected to that position.
Board committee appointments were also set at the meeting, and are as follows:

Non-board member appointments included Art Dux as census taker, Kevin Ricke as Title IX officer and Dale Hogie and Jennifer Heggestuen as human rights representatives.
Each board member will be reimbursed $40 for each committee meeting attended, and $70 for each board meeting. For full-day meetings, they will receive $100, and their mileage will be reimbursed for these meetings at a rate of 50 cents per mile. All of these rates were unchanged from last year.
The regular board meeting schedule was also revised slightly.
The meeting times for the regular January, March, November and December meetings will now be at 5:30 p.m., to allow board members to attend school basketball games.
The February board meeting will be at a special time, Thursday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m., but all other meetings, April through October, will begin at 8 p.m. on the third Monday of the month.
Meeting locations will also alternate between the Lake Park and Audubon sites, as in years past. The Jan. 18 meeting (held on a Tuesday because Monday, Jan. 17 is Martin Luther King Day) will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Audubon, while the Feb. 17 meeting will be at 7 p.m. in Lake Park.
