Big 2nd half propels Lakers
The lid was blown off of Thursday’s home game against visiting Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, as the Detroit Lakes boys’ basketball team ran away from the Rebels 71-51 with a 40-point second half.
Junior guard Christian Hedstrom scored 22 points, going 10-12 from the free throw line, while senior guard Jackson Lyngaas contributed 11 points to help lift the Lakers to 13-6 on the season.
After building a 31-25 halftime lead, the Lakers sealed the win with a 40-26 second half, as they collected 31 rebounds in the game.
“In the second half, we had a lot more intensity,” said DL head coach Robb Flint. “Sam Champa led us with his up-tempo play and we asked him to play good defense, in which he hustled his tail off.
“He had some big offensive rebounds and deflected a lot of balls, which helped keep many of our series alive.”
Champa had seven rebounds in the game, tied with teammate Ben Hokanson, who also had eight points.
Hedstrom continues finding his shot, which is forcing defenders to guard him a bit more aggressively.
“Christian does a little of everything and has been hitting his perimeter shot,” Flint said. “That has helped when he gives a shot fake and gets fouled. I’ve been telling all the guys to go to the basket aggressively, because that will help us get to the free throw line more.”
DL went 18-24 from the line Thursday.
The Lakers played Friday night against Park Rapids, and will play in Staples-Motley Monday, where they could potentially tie Crosby-Ironton for the Mid-State Conference championship.
That is if DL can win both games (Friday’s game results will be in Wednesday’s paper).
“We need our intensity level high every night in all of our games,” Flint said. “After our next two Mid-State games, we have a tough schedule with two big section games against Thief River Falls (17-2) and Alexandria (10-7).
“If we can win out, especially against those two teams, we can hopefully secure at least a four seed and a home playoff game.”
The game against the Prowlers will be inside Ralph Anderson Gym Tuesday, starting at 7:15 p.m.
