The Detroit Lakes football team had to get their road legs back underneath them Friday, after traveling to East Grand Forks, the first away game for the Lakers in over three weeks.

Although DL became their own worst enemy, the Lakers remained undefeated with a 28-6 victory over the winless Green Wave.

The game also became a milestone marker, as senior quarterback Michael Herzog eclipsed Todd Steinmetz’ all-time scoring record of 278 points after scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter.

“It was our first road game in a while and we knew we were going to have to play perfect,” Herzog said. “Unfortunately, we had some calls go against us, which slowed us down some early on.”

The wheels hit the pavement squealing at first, though, as junior Sam Champa ran the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and senior running back Jarett Nosal added a 45-yard TD scamper in the first quarter to take a 14-0 lead.

But penalties stranded the Lakers in the second quarter, as six yellow flags on DL stalled all of their drives, despite snapping 18 plays from the line of scrimmage in the frame.

“We couldn’t get into a rhythm offensively because of all the penalties,” said DL head coach Flint Motschenbacher. “We can’t continue to have third and 15 on drives, we need to eliminate those mistakes. If we do, we can be pretty good.”

Nosal continued to raise his yards per carry mark, thanks to his 176 yards on 13 carries against EGF, which is a nice 13.5 average.

He is averaging 11.9 ypc on the season and has been finding the holes the offensive line has been creating.

“Jarett is having a great year, whenever the line can get a block for him, he can break one,” Motschenbacher said. “All 11 players have been getting the job done, and if they continue, they will have success.”

The Lakers defense also held the Green Wave offense at bay, limiting them to just one first down the entire first half, while limiting them to 137 yards rushing the entire game for an average of 4.0 yards per carry.

The second half saw DL commit zero penalties and reestablish dominance on the ground, as Nosal broke off a 46 yard run on the Lakers’ first possession in the third quarter, to set up Herzog’s first rushing TD of the night from four yards out.

On DL’s next possession, Herzog and Nosal combined for 62 yards rushing and ending with Herzog diving in from one yard out and right up to the top of the all-time scoring list, after needing only eight points to pass Steinmetz before the game.

“Looking at the list of the all-time leading scorers in DL, is just an exceptional list with many great players,” Herzog said. “It’s the coolest thing that my name will be tossed in there now. But football is the ultimate team sport and it’s been 100-percent the offensive line.

“It’s 11 guys doing their job.”

Herzog’s historical touchdown was his 13th rushing score of the season, despite missing the Staples-Motley game two weeks ago.

It also put the Lakers firmly in control 28-0, as the DL defense stymied EGF the rest of the way, sans a last-minute touchdown pass from quarterback Trevor Selk to Gilbert Trevino from eight yards out.

Herzog just missed the century mark in rushing, with 96 yards on 23 carries, which puts him at 399 for the season.

DL kicker Luke Payne also went 4-4 on his PAT kicks, which is emphasizing the importance of the Lakers’ success on special teams this year and their wide 180-59 scoring margin on their opponents.

“Sam (Champa’s) kickoff return to start the game was huge, we’ve been close to breaking one all season,” Motschenbacher said. “The defense played pretty solid, too, we just need to find a little more consistency on offense.”

The Lakers did struggle with their passing game, as Herzog went 2-15 for 49 yards.

“We’ve been working on our passing and it will come,” Motschenbacher said.

The defense also created two more turnovers with junior cornerback Ryan Cihak picking off two Selk passes.

The Lakers now are plus-seven in turnover ratio, with DL committing six turnovers and their opponents 13.

Next up is Park Rapids on the road. The Panthers are having a stellar season at 4-1, with their latest being a 34-7 win over Thief River Falls, which gave the Lakers a hard test before falling 29-21.

It will be one of DL’s stiffest challenges of the season, thus far.

“They have exceptional athletes and have some big play ability,” Motschenbacher said. “They are playing with a lot of confidence now and can be a very physical team.”

Park Rapids’ only loss came in the season opener against undefeated Hawley 35-14.

Since then, they have beaten Roseau 21-6, Crookston 38-7, Pequot Lakes 14-12 and Thief River Falls 34-7.

Game time is 7 p.m. in Park Rapids, as the Lakers try to extend their HOL win streak to 13 games and stay in control of winning their second straight conference title.
