Big second half helps Spuds down Detroit Lakes
The Detroit Lakes boys' basketball team stalled in the second half after building an impressive 25-23 halftime lead over the home team Moorhead Spuds Tuesday.
The Lakers' shooting went cold in the second half, and DL was outscored by a hefty 42-16 margin to fall to the Spuds 65-41.
Moorhead's Scott Petry netted four three pointers in the victory, to lead all scorers with 17 points.
Josh Stalberger led the Lakers with 12 points, while senior guard Reed Oistad finished with nine.
The loss drops DL to 2-5 on the season, with a pair of road games coming up in Pequot Lakes (6-1) Thursday and in Breckenridge (5-2) Saturday.
Lakers' shooting falls short in D-C tourney
A strong defensive effort snagged DL's second win of the season in a 47-38 win over host Dassel-Cokato in last week's holiday tournament.
But shooting became a liability in the two-game tournament, resulting in a 61-47 loss to St. Francis.
"We can play some great defense, but that doesn't matter if you can't score," said DL head coach Robb Flint. "Our guys couldn't have hit the ocean with their shooting."
Stalberger had a solid outing in the two games, finishing as DL's lone selection on the All-Tournament team after scoring 17 points against St. Francis and eight versus Dassel-Cokato.
More importantly, Stalberger was the driving force behind guarding one of St. Francis' 6-7 forwards.
"Our defensive gameplan worked out great against their two 6-7 forwards," Flint said. "We held (St. Francis) to 25 points in the first half, but we only managed 15 points. But Josh Stalberger took it to his guy with his defense."
Stalberger also finished with 11 rebounds against St. Francis, while freshman Joe Mollberg netted 10 points.
"Joe's confidence was down a little after the Dassel-Cokato game (with only two points), but he and (freshman) Brian Labat both came out and contributed against St. Francis," Flint added.
The Lakers owned the paint in their win over Dassel-Cokato, despite not shooting very well out on the perimeter.
Senior forwards Kyle Muckenhirn and Zane Kotschevar each had nine points from the blocks, while Stalberger added eight from within the lane.
"We scored most of our points in the paint," Flint said. "Our guys attacked on the block and Dassel-Cokato missed a lot of their shots, too."
Earlier in the season, turnovers were a problem for the Lakers, but against St. Francis, they limited that number to just two in the second half and 11 on the game.
"Our defense is there and we have been cutting down on our turnovers, but now we have a low shooting percentage," Flint said.
As has been par for the season, DL had multiple scorers, with seven different players finding the scoring column against St. Francis and 10 versus Dassel-Cokato.
"We are just looking for someone to step and some players who can show some consistency (in scoring)," the DL coach said.
