The Swedish Cultural Heritage Society of the Red River Valley meets at 2 p.m. today (Sunday)?in Elim Lutheran Church, 321 9th St. N., Fargo. The program "Iron Crosses: A Folk Art that Transcends Cultures" will be presented by Nels and Sally Backman. The program will feature iron crosses of Eksharad, Varmland, Sweden and German-Russian iron crosses from North and South Dakota.

Country music icon Loretta Lynn comes to Mahnomen's Shooting Star Casino for an 8 p.m. show on Friday, Oct. 24. Musicians Jim Ouska and Jane Aleckson, a blues/jazz duo from Minneapolis, will perform on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center, starting at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets on the night of the concert are $12; advance tickets are now on sale for $10. The concert is part of the fall music series at the NYMRCC.

On Saturday, Oct. 25, Ulen-Hitterdal's Top Hat Theatre will welcome the New Roots Duo. Their music is a unique combination of finger-style guitarists Ben Woolman and Dan Schwartz. Season tickets are still available for the entire season (eight remaining concerts) in the Ulen-Hitterdal school office, Northwestern Bank and at the door for a cost of $48 individual and $120 family. Separate tickets for the New Roots Duo are available at the school office for $15 adults and $10 students. The Fargo-Moorhead Ballet will bring its Halloween show, "Spooky Ballets," to the Historic Holmes Theatre for one show only on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7.50 for students. Come early and enjoy a Ghoulish Grandparents' Tea in the Holmes Ballroom at 2:30 p.m. This first-ever event for children and their grandparents or special friends will feature bite-size sandwiches, "witches' brew," a costume contest, photo ops and other ghoulish activities. Cost is $25 for grandparents and $15 for children, including admission to the ballet as well as the cost of food and party favors.

Francis Gary Powers, Jr., returns to the ITOW Veterans Museum in Perham for a 3 p.m. presentation on Saturday, Nov. 1, to mark the closing of a traveling exhibit currently on loan from the Cold War Museum. The exhibit, which is on display at the ITOW Veterans Museum through Friday, Oct. 31, features artifacts and photographs from the U-2 Incident.  On May 1, 1960, at the height of the 'Cold War,' Francis Gary Powers, the pilot of an unarmed reconnaissance plane, was shot down over Russia. The incident and the subsequent attempt at cover-up nearly sparked a hot war.  His son, Francis Gary Powers, Jr., speaks knowingly about the U-2 Incident and the surrounding events. The closing reception for this exhibit will include a brief talk by Powers and time for questions and answers. A new exhibit about Butler Township, created specifically for Butler's recent 125th anniversary celebration, is now on display at the History Museum of East Otter Tail County in Perham. Photographs and stories about the township will be on display through the end of the year. The Becker County Historical Society is happy to announce extended museum hours this fall. The Becker County Museum & Research

Library is now open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with extended hours on Thursdays 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The museum is located at 714 Summit Ave., next to the DL Community & Cultural Center.
