Board puts Adams on paid leave
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

Affirming an action taken by Board Chairman Dr. Tom Seaworth over the weekend, the Detroit Lakes School Board has placed the district's superintendent, Mark Adams, on paid administrative leave until further notice.

The action took place at a special board meeting called Wednesday morning "for preliminary consideration of allegations" against Adams.

Adams, who became the district's superintendent in July of this year, has recently come under fire for a Sept. 9 incident involving an altercation with Ogema area farmer Mark Rothschadl. He was indicted Oct. 31 on felony counts of first degree assault and third degree assault by a Becker County grand jury.

It took the school board less than five minutes to reach its decision to place Adams on paid leave "until further notice," Seaworth said.

Until the matter is resolved, District Education Director Lowell Niklaus has been named as interim superintendent. Niklaus was Adams' immediate predecessor in the position, but stepped down earlier this year to take the post of education director for the district.

"This was all done based on recommendations made by our legal counsel," Seaworth said. As such, any further actions taken by the district may or may not be based on the timeline for legal proceedings with regard to Adams' case, which "may take quite some time" to be resolved, he added.

"Our decisions will be based on what our legal counsel recommends as best for this district," Seaworth said.

Adams' next court appearance, an omnibus hearing, is set for 1:30 p.m. Dec. 18 before Becker County District Judge Jack Pearson.
