Boats & Bars to be filled with music, fun
Once again, it’s time to “float your boat for charity!”
The ninth annual Boats & Bars fundraiser for the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity gets underway at 10 a.m. this Saturday, Aug. 23.
Held rain or shine, Boats & Bars begins with tickets and t-shirts being sold at Zorbaz in Detroit Lakes, where Denny Craswell will perform live at 11 a.m.
Craswell, formerly from Minneapolis, is a five-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee who now makes his home in Detroit Lakes.
Each $15 ticket is a punch card that will get the purchaser a free drink at each of the three participating bars — Zorbaz, Holiday Inn Beach Bar and The Bridge Marina Bar & Grill — between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.
At noon, the action shifts from Zorbaz to the sandbar between Big and Little Detroit lakes, where the Island Time Band will perform live until 3 p.m.
While the show goes on rain or shine, the Parrot Heads are, of course, hoping for 85 degrees and sunny skies, Brogren noted.
From 3 to 5 p.m., there will be live music at not just one, but two venues. The Hardwood Groove Trio performs at the Bridge Marina Bar & Grill (located at the Long Bridge), while Denny Craswell, also known as “The Castaway,” performs once again at the Holiday Inn Beach Bar.
At 8 p.m., there will be a raffle drawing at Zorbaz, with all proceeds to go toward Habitat for Humanity as well.
Finally, at 9:30 p.m., the Knoxville, Tenn., band Homemade Wine takes the stage at Zorbaz to wrap up the festivities.
“They’re like a cross between Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Zac Brown Band,” Brogren said enthusiastically. “They’re so good.”
All in all, the day promises to be a great way to end the summer at the beach.
“It’s a great time, and all the proceeds benefit Habitat, so it’s for a good cause,” Brogren said.
The Lakes Area Parrot Heads are a local nonprofit that is part of a nationwide charitable organization which is also known for its avid support of musician Jimmy Buffett, and members travel many miles each year to attend his concerts.
