Former Crookston and Sun City, Ariz., resident Boyd D. Holcomb, 92, of Fargo, died Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at MeritCare Palliative Care Unit in Fargo, after a brief battle with cancer.
Boyd Donald Holcomb was born to Herbert and Nellie (Huston) Holcomb on Nov. 8, 1915, in Detroit Lakes. Boyd attended a rural one-room school, graduating at age 16. As a teenager, Boyd did odd jobs, including caddying, raking lakeshores, chauffeuring, truck driving, and working on his parents' farm. Boyd worked for the Production Credit Association (PCA) in Detroit Lakes as a bookkeeper from April 1934 until mid-1938.
Boyd bought accounting businesses in Crookston and Thief River Falls, Minn. He joined with Gerald Knudson Accounting of Crookston in 1967 to form the partnership of Holcomb, Knudson and Company. Soon after, the partners opened an office in Grand Forks, and later with additional partners, opened offices in other locations, including Bemidji, Moorhead and Hallock, Minn.; and Devils Lake, N.D.
Boyd lived and worked in Crookston until 1978, when the firm opened an office in Alexandria. At that time, the family moved to Alexandria, where Boyd served in the capacity of administrative officer of the partnership. In October 1980, Boyd retired from the firm. Boyd and Evelyn spent several winters traveling and retired to Sun City in January 1984.
Boyd is survived by his wife, Evelyn Holcomb of Fargo; sons, Michael (Mary) Holcomb of Woodbury, Minn., and Brad (Laurie) Holcomb of Grand Forks; daughters, Candace (Frank) Holcomb-James of Eugene, Ore., Susan Vaudrin of Fargo and Merle (Gary) Selvaag of Moorhead; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Community Baptist Church, Fargo.
