The Detroit Lakes boys' basketball team came out of the locker room hot, and stayed hot in a dominating 81-46 win against Staples-Motley Thursday night in Staples.

"We came out with a lot of energy and jumped on them 6-0 right away, forcing them to take a time out," said head coach Robb Flint. "We didn't let up at all from there. Our team was extremely focused.

"It didn't matter who we sent in to sub, everybody was ready to go," he added.

"We didn't miss a beat. They just kept pouring it on."

The Lakers were up 24 points at halftime.

"The game was never really in question," Flint said.

Senior guard Kirk McLeod topped all Laker scorers with 16 points, to go along with six steals and seven assists, while fellow guard Derek Long led on the boards with nine rebounds and finished with 7 points.

Trey Lyngass was the only other Laker to reach double digits, with 10 points, though several others scored between 8 and 9 points, including Ryan Cihak and Nick Groth with 9 apiece; Jackson Lyngaas and Christian Hedstrom, who each finished with 8.

"We had very balanced scoring -- everybody contributed," Flint said. "I thought we did a really good job of being unselfish with passing the ball.

"We shot extremely well -- 59 percent from the field -- because we'd pass up a good shot for a great shot."

Austin Eiter finished with 6 points, while Karter Smith chipped in 4 points, and Corbin Duncan and Sam Champa finished with two apiece.

Jackson Lyngaas also contributed four rebounds.

The Lakers had a chance for a little revenge in Bemidji Friday night, having lost to the Lumberjacks earlier in the season.

They also had an opportunity to end their season above .500 with a 14-12 record. (Results from that game will be in Wednesday's Detroit Lakes Tribune.)

The section playoffs start Tuesday for the fourth-seeded Lakers, as they take on top-seeded Fergus Falls on the Otters' home court.

"If we play well, we'll have a shot at advancing," Flint said.
