Bringing in inexperience at the defensive and goalie positions, the Detroit Lakes boys' hockey team tried to fend off two solid squads to open the season, but lost both to start 0-2.

The Lakers lost their season opener in Pequot Lakes by the score of 5-4, while Fergus Falls brought a potent scoring attack to raid Kent Freeman Arena 9-2 Saturday.

The Otters ran up a 3-0 lead in the first period, with junior defenseman Derek Kinder scoring with just 1:13 off the clock.

Fergus Falls kept the pressure on the net and DL goalie Chris Widme with a tally two minutes later by Jared Swiontek on a rebound effort off a hard shot by defenseman Nick Kangas.

The score was upped to 3-0 on a power play goal by Joe Swenson, who put a nice backhand on net.

The Lakers did manage to pull the lead back to 3-1 on forward Alex Phelps' shot past FF goalie Jason Lofquist at 11:57.

But a late rally by the Otters answered the score with 30 ticks left of the second period on a goal by junior forward Adam Heifort.

Nathan Baker converted a two-man advantage goal for the Lakers in the third period to cap DL's offensive output on the night, while the Otters notched five more in the back-breaking final frame.

Lucas Gervais had two goals for Fergus Falls and Lofquist picked up the win between the pipes with 18 saves.

The Lakers will host St. Bernard's of St. Paul Friday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
