The goalie position became deeper for the Lakers, as back-up sophomore goalie Austin Fritz picked up a pair of wins over International Falls Friday and Northern Lakes Tuesday.

But DL’s 2-0 loss in Kittson Central (12-3-1) puts the Lakers a step behind in the Section 8-1A standings.

The Bearcats’ defense was able to stifle the fast and potent Laker attack, limiting it to 18 shots, while putting 31 on starting junior goalie MacKenzie Steele, who played very solid with 29 saves.

Kittson Central’s Billy Thorsteinson opened the scoring with a power play goal 8:54 into the first period, while Dalton Klegstad added the insurance tally 7:59 into the third.

The Lakers were 0-7 on their power play opportunities.

DL dominated the Broncos 5-2 by outshooting them 52-17. Fritz finished with 15 saves.

International Falls (4-12-1) led 1-0 after the first period, but three goals in the second and two more in the third more than tipped the scales to the home team.

Sophomore center Jon Richards tallied his first natural hat trick of the season with three straight in the second period. Assisting on the goals were Ryan DeConcini on all three and Wilson Lysford on the second.

Two of the goals by Richards were short-handed.

Lysford added a score 1:05 into the third, while Brandon Olson capped the scoring.

It was more of the same Tuesday, as DL outshot Northern Lakes (8-9-1) by a hefty 41-18 margin.

Three Lakers scored two goals apiece in DeConcini, senior defenseman Michael Herrmann and Lysford.

Richards had a goal, but also recorded four assists in the 9-2 victory.

Fritz compiled 16 saves in his second win of the season.

The Lakers will host Prairie Centre (12-6-1) Friday and Fargo Davies Saturday.
