A third period rally fell short for the Detroit Lakes boys’ hockey team, as visiting Fergus Falls notched the game-winning goal with 1:16 left in regulation to take the narrow 2-1 victory Tuesday.

The loss drops the Lakers to 0-2-1, coming at the heels of a 5-1 loss to Grafton, N.D., last Saturday inside Kent Freeman Arena.

The win for the Otters was their season opener.

After being outshot by a 24-18 margin in the first two periods and trailing 1-0, the Lakers unleashed 15 shots on Fergus Falls’ goalie Andrew MacFarlane, before breaking through 7:41 into the frame on a Casey Paskey goal, with assists coming from Michael Herrmann and Tanner Steele to tie the score at 1-1.

But the Otters gained a power play late in the third, as Colton Buseth was able to pick up the game-winner on assists by Ean Goos and Sam Rausch.

Laker goalie MacKen-zie Steele was solid in the net, picking up 37 saves, while MacFarlane had 32 on the night.

Grafton used a balanced attack on the Lakers Saturday, scoring in every period, while outshooting the Lakers 32-21.

Jonathan Hallisey scored DL’s lone goal 4:33 into the second period, with Paskey picking up the assist.

Brit Broulliard had two goals for Grafton, while MacKenzie Steele had 27 saves.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Lakers, as they host Section 8-1A powerhouse Warroad, which will travel to Mound-Westonka for their season opener Friday.
