Boys Tennis: Lakers advance through 1st round
The first round of the Section 8-1A went the Detroit Lakes boys’ tennis team’s way, as they downed Wadena-Deer Creek 4-3 Monday in Perham.
The No. 4 seeded Lakers won two in both the singles and doubles competition and advanced to the second round, which was postponed to Thursday.
DL’s Carlos Espinosa won his No. 1 singles match over Shane Perry in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, while No. 2 Caleb Howard downed W-DC’s Austin Andreen 7-5, 6-1.
The Lakers clinched the victory as the No. 1 and undefeated doubles team of Isaac and Alex Fondrick won 6-4, 6-2 over Mike Paavola and Drew Larson, while the third doubles team of Brady Crawford and Dylan Bremseth won 6-0, 6-2.
The Lakers will face No. 1 seeded Thief River Falls Thursday at 10 a.m., while No. 2 Crookston is pitted against No. 3 East Grand Forks.
The championship is 12 p.m. Thursday in Perham.
