Breckenridge Cowboys ride to convincing win over DL boy cagers
The athletic Breckenridge Cowboys rode away with a convincing 76-48 win over Detroit Lakes Saturday, behind the 21 points of junior forward Joe Terfehr.
The 6-6 post scored 18 points in the first half, to pace the Cowboys to a commanding 40-19 halftime advantage.
"We had match-up problems with (Terfehr)," said DL head coach Robb Flint. "He could catch the eight-footers thrown into him and elevate his shots above our defenders."
The Cowboys did an effective job attacking the paint, where they made a living at the free throw line by going 27-37 from the stripe -- with Terfehr finishing 8-11, all eight of those coming in the first half.
"Breckenridge was just more athletic and stronger than we were and that enabled them to beat us to the ball," Flint added.
The Lakers had 25 turnovers, but also created 22 for the Cowboys.
Senior forward Kyle Muckenhirn led the way for the Lakers with 14 points, but DL had more of a hard time getting the ball inside to their big guys.
A full-court press by Breckenridge caused plenty of headaches for the Lakers, who were not able to get into a flow with their offense.
"We had to work so hard to get it to a half-court game, that we couldn't get into our set offense," Flint said.
The Lakers didn't have as much success from the free throw line as the Cowboys, going 10-17.
The loss drops DL to 2-7 and extends its losing streak to four games, while Breckenridge improves to 7-2 on the season.
The Lakers will host Mid-State Conference team Park Rapids (5-4) Friday, starting at 7:30 p.m.
The Minnesota Timberwolves mascot "Crunch" will be on hand to perform his famous dunking show at halftime.
A turkey feed will be hosted by the Laker Sports Booster Club, starting at 5:30 p.m.
DL will host a youth basketball tournament Saturday, March 7, for grades three through eight.
