Busy weekend: Water carnival goes out with a flourish

The 77th Northwest Water Carnival comes to a close this weekend -- but it's going out with a flourish!

Be sure to head on over to the DL City Park this evening. There will be kids' games from 3 to 9 p.m., the Junior Water Fights get underway at 5 p.m., and the adult Water Fights begin at 7 p.m.

Then walk over to the Pavilion to party with the Front Fenders from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Tomorrow will be even busier. There's a Fun Run/Walk at 7 a.m., followed by the Chili & Salsa Cookoff at 8 a.m., and water carnival guests will have a chance to sample the cookoff goods starting at noon in the Pavilion.

There's a paddle board race at 10 a.m., softball tournament at Snappy Park starting at 9 a.m., and the Baseball Classic gets underway at Washington Ballpark at 10 a.m.

Kids' events begin at 9 a.m. in the city park with a pet show, followed by a pet and doll parade at 10:45 a.m. The Ronald McDonald variety show starts at noon, which is also when the inflatable games will be open for business.

There's a Classic Car Show at 11 a.m., Picnic in the Park at 11:30 a.m., Sand Volleyball Tournament starting at noon, and a Bean Bag Tournament starting at 1 p.m. The afternoon festivities conclude with a Sand Castle tournament at 3 p.m. on the City Beach.

The Bash on the Beach, featuring music by Blackhawk, gets underway at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Then on Sunday morning, the Knights of Columbus will host a pancake breakfast from 8 to 11:30 a.m., to be followed by inflatable games in the park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Parade of the Northwest gets underway at 1 p.m., and will be followed by a waterski show at 3 p.m.

Other events

• The Bearclaw Muzzleloaders of Northern Minnesota host their annual rendezvous this Saturday and Sunday at the Height of Land Sportsmans Club, located 15 miles east of Detroit Lakes on Highway 34, (follow the signs). The weekend features a reenactment of a pre-1840s rendezvous encampment, and there will be shooting, tomahawk throwing and other competitions held throughout both days. The public is welcome to attend. The event runs Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon. For more info, contact Al Witthoeft at 218-841-7096.

• Saturday night at Fair Hills Resort, the third weekend of its "Fair Hills Live" summer concert and drive-in movie series at 5 p.m.

This week's combo features music by Billy D & the Crystals from 5 to 9 p.m., followed by a screening of the movie "E.T." at dusk.

• Also on Saturday, Jerry's Dance Band will perform at an Old-Time Variety Dance, which takes place from 7 to 10 p.m. in Frazee's White Pine Room.

• The new season at Jasper's Theatre began this week, and there's a performance set for 7 p.m. Saturday. The theater is located on Highway 34 East in Park Rapids. Call 218-237-4333 for ticket prices.

• Bruce Neumann and Tiki D will also be performing live at Lakeside Tavern on Sunday, from 2 to 6 p.m. For more information, please call 218-847-1891.

• Also on Sunday, the Dave Ferreira Trio will bring their hot jazz sounds to the Richwood Winery from 3 to 6 p.m. There is no admission charge. Call 218-844-5990 for more information.

• At 2 p.m. Sunday, Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge will host the free informational program "Leave it to Beavers." Discover the amazing adaptations this creature has acquired and its role in Minnesota history. Meet at the Chippewa Picnic Area; call 218-847-2641 for more information.
