Calendar: 10,000 Lakes Festival to feature Flaming Lips

In a rare stand-up appearance, comedy lovers from around the region will catch a glimpse of one of the undisputed kings of American comedy, Bill Cosby. On May 1, 1960, Captain Francis Gary Powers was shot down over the Soviet Union while piloting his U2 spy plane sparking one of the most famous international incidents of the Cold War. The latest exhibit at the In Their Own Words (ITOW) Veterans Museum, "Top Secret," opened May 1 and includes photographs and artifacts from the Cold War Museum about the U-2 Incident. The Sons of Norway Vikingland Lodge No. 495, Detroit Lakes, meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14 in the DL Nutrition Center. Larry Longtine to talk about carousel horses, Dale Gorham, South Dakota to display his "Noah's Ark and Animals" carvings, and Lodge members will display their wood carvings.

Detroit Lakes High School presents the second annual showing of art works from the students of David Balfour and Vern Schnathorst. Nearly 60-70 water colors, graphic arts posters, photographs, pen and ink drawings, drawings in pencil expressing the artists ideas and techniques are on display in Trinity Lutheran Church. The exhibit is free and open to the public weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 a.m. and Sundays from 8 to 11:30 a.m. throughout the month of May.

Individual artists who would like to learn about grant opportunities offered by the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Lake Region Arts Council (LRAC) are invited to attend a free grant information session on Monday, May 19 from 6-8 p.m. at the LRAC office, 133 South Mill St., Fergus Falls. Sessions are free, but please pre-register. Artists can also schedule a one-on-one appointment with an Arts Board program officer, on the morning after each session. The Lake Region Arts Council has announced that it will be presenting three new exhibits in the LRAC Gallery from April 2008 to January 2009. The themes of the new exhibits are: "Rural Scenes, April 14-July 11; "Abstract Art," July 14-Oct. 11; "Female Form in Art," Oct. 13-Jan. 10, 2009. All exhibits are juried and open to visual artists of all disciplines.

The Cormorant Area Art Club will hold its 11th Annual Art Show Saturday and Sunday, July 12-13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The event will be held at the Cormorant Community Center located in Cormorant Village, 13 miles south of Lake Park and 1.5 miles north of Zorbaz on Pelican Lake. Twenty-five regional artists will display a wide variety of watercolors, acrylic and oil paintings, rosemaling, pine needle basketry, prints, cards and art gift items. There is no admission charge. Scheduled for July 23-26 at the Soo Pass Ranch, in Minnesota's beautiful Lakes Region, the 6th annual 10,000 Lakes Festival will feature some of today's most innovative musical artists performing on five stages, including former Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh & Friends, an all star lineup that changes from year to year, and former Grateful Dead drummer Micky Hart, touring with Steve Kimock on guitar and George Porter, Jr., former bassist with New Orleans' seminal funk band, the Meters, among others. The 2008 artist roster will also include the 10KLF debut of The Flaming Lips, Oklahoma's premiere alternative rock band.
