Calendar: Tuesdays in the Park concert series begins

The eighth annual Street Faire at the Lakes concludes today (Sunday) in downtown Detroit Lakes, with a variety of new entertainment and artists in addition to returning local favorites. Today's entertainment lineup includes Patchouli performing at 11:30 a.m. and jazz guitarist Andy Schneider at 2 p.m. Magician Nick Bretz will be around all day Sunday as well. Kids' entertainment will take place throughout the day, with the Wonder Weavers (storytelling and arts and crafts) and Barrel Train Rides. And be sure to check out some of the unique artists that flock to the Faire, and graze through the options in the food court.

A Miss Minnesota competition send-off party for Miss Frazee Katie Dretsch, Miss Northwest Mackenzie Ross and Miss Teen Minnesota contestant Alyssa Mayfield begins at 4 p.m. today in the Frazee Community Center. Katie and Mackenzie will be competing in the Miss Minnesota Pageant and Alyssa will be competing in the Miss Teen Minnesota Pageant in June.

Itasca State Park will have an open house today, featuring a "Picnic in the Park" with live music throughout the day, a log-sawing contest, bison chip chucking contest, loon calling contest, pow wow dancers, Taste of Minnesota food samples and family fun activities including a variety of games. There will be free park admission throughout the open house, which runs from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The Tuesdays in the Park summer concert series returns to the Detroit Lakes City Park Bandshell on June 3, with an appearance by the Lakes Area Community Concert Band. There will be free, live music every Tuesday through the months of June, July and August -- with the exception of July 15 -- starting at 7 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the concerts will be moved from the bandshell to the DL Pavilion. The Lake Region Arts Council has announced that it will be presenting three new exhibits in the LRAC Gallery through January 2009. The themes of the new exhibits are: "Rural Scenes," now through July 11; "Abstract Art," July 14-Oct. 11; "Female Form in Art," Oct. 13-Jan. 10, 2009. All exhibits are juried and open to visual artists of all disciplines.

On May 1, 1960, Captain Francis Gary Powers was shot down over the Soviet Union while piloting his U2 spy plane sparking one of the most famous international incidents of the Cold War. The latest exhibit at the In Their Own Words (ITOW) Veterans Museum, "Top Secret," which opened May 1 and continues through Oct. 31, includes photographs and artifacts from the Cold War Museum about the U-2 Incident. The Cormorant Area Art Club will hold its 11th Annual Art Show Saturday and Sunday, July 12-13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The event will be held at the Cormorant Community Center located in Cormorant Village, 13 miles south of Lake Park and 1.5 miles north of Zorbaz on Pelican Lake. Twenty-five regional artists will display a wide variety of watercolors, acrylic and oil paintings, rosemaling, pine needle basketry, prints, cards and art gift items. There is no admission charge. Scheduled for July 23-26 at the Soo Pass Ranch, in Minnesota's beautiful Lakes Region, the 6th annual 10,000 Lakes Festival will feature some of today's most innovative musical artists performing on five stages, including former Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh & Friends, an all star lineup that changes from year to year, and former Grateful Dead drummer Micky Hart, touring with Steve Kimock on guitar and George Porter, Jr., former bassist with New Orleans' seminal funk band, the Meters, among others.
