The Tuesdays in the Park summer concert series returns to the Detroit Lakes City Park Bandshell on June 3, with an appearance by the Lakes Area Community Concert Band. There will be free, live music every Tuesday through the months of June, July and August -- with the exception of July 15 -- starting at 7 p.m. This year's line-up also includes other local favorites like the Purple Pan Steel Drum Band, Park Rapids Community Band and Doc & the Scrubs, as well as a few new acts such as Vincent & the Van Goes, Mark Fogelson, Robbin Bueng and the Red Letter Band. In case of inclement weather, the concerts will be moved from the bandshell to the DL Pavilion. The Waubun Rising Sun Dancers host a square dance from 2 to 4:30 p.m. today (Sunday) in the Waubun Community Center. Roger Lueth will call tips. Lunch will be served, and all dancers and spectators are welcome.

The Summit Dance School presents "The Greatest Show on Earth" at 5 p.m. today in Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre.

This Monday evening, May 19, the Detroit Lakes High School Choral Department will present the Ninth Grade Choir, Varsity Choir, Concert Choir and Laker Singers in their annual spring concert. The program will feature a 48-minute choral medley entitled "100 Years of Broadway: A Choral Revue," arranged by Mac Huff. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the George Simson Auditorium at the Detroit Lakes Middle School and is free to the public.

Come to the Detroit Lakes Public Library from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday, May 20 for a newsletter creation computer class. During the session, you will learn to create a newsletter in either Microsoft Word or Microsoft Publisher. It is ideal to know the parts of a computer and their functions as well as how to use the mouse and open programs.

Detroit Lakes High School presents the second annual showing of art works from the students of David Balfour and Vern Schnathorst. Nearly 60-70 water colors, graphic arts posters, photographs, pen and ink drawings, drawings in pencil expressing the artists ideas and techniques are on display in Trinity Lutheran Church. The exhibit is free and open to the public weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 a.m. and Sundays from 8 to 11:30 a.m. throughout the month of May.

Memorial Day services, sponsored by the Perham VFW Post 4020 and American Legion Post 61 and their Auxiliaries will be held at the ITOW Veterans Museum in Perham on Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m. Speakers for the event include Perham city mayor Kevin Keil and U.S. Army Captain Aaron Krenz. Music will be provided by members of the Perham High School Brass Quintet along with Russ Bunker and Ann Dardis. The ITOW Veterans Museum will be open all day, with no charge to visit the exhibits. From 7 a.m.-12 noon there will be an "all you can eat" Dad's Belgian Waffle Breakfast hosted by the Masonic Lodges of Perham and Wadena. Tickets are $6 in advance or $6.50 at the door. Children age 5 and younger eat free. Also on Memorial Day the VFW Auxiliary will hold a bake sale. Call 218-346-7678 for more information.

Individual artists who would like to learn about grant opportunities offered by the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Lake Region Arts Council (LRAC) are invited to attend a free grant information session on Monday, May 19 from 6-8 p.m. at the LRAC office, 133 South Mill St., Fergus Falls. Sessions are free, but please pre-register. Artists can also schedule a one-on-one appointment with an Arts Board program officer, on the morning after each session. The Lake Region Arts Council has announced that it will be presenting three new exhibits in the LRAC Gallery from April 2008 to January 2009. The themes of the new exhibits are: "Rural Scenes, April 14-July 11; "Abstract Art," July 14-Oct. 11; "Female Form in Art," Oct. 13-Jan. 10, 2009. All exhibits are juried and open to visual artists of all disciplines.

Scheduled for July 23-16 at the Soo Pass Ranch, in Minnesota's beautiful Lakes Region, the 6th annual 10,000 Lakes Festival will feature some of today's most innovative musical artists performing on five stages, including former Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh & Friends, an all star lineup that changes from year to year, and former Grateful Dead drummer Micky Hart, touring with Steve Kimock on guitar and George Porter, Jr., former bassist with New Orleans' seminal funk band, the Meters, among others.
