Candidate forum set Tuesday
The Detroit Lakes Area League of Women Voters (LWV), in partnership with the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce, will be hosting a candidate forum on Tuesday, July 29 at 7 p.m., for the Becker County auditor/treasurer’s office and the Becker County recorder’s office.
The forum will be held at the Detroit Lakes Public Library and will be moderated by Sharon Sinclair, an experienced LWV moderator.
Auditor/Treasurer candidates Darin Halvorson, Mary Hendrickson and Brant Mouw have all been invited to attend.
Darryl Hensel, Sandy Listul, Karen Wenner and Patty Swenson, candidates for the recorder position, are also invited to meet with voters.
This will be a single forum, with all candidates on the panel. Some questions will be answered by all, other questions will be specific to the office sought.
Voters attending the forum have two opportunities to submit questions to the candidates.
Written questions will be accepted throughout the forum. The League of Women Voters also has an e-mail for voters to submit questions in advance. That email address email@example.com. By LWV-Minnesota policy, the identity of the person asking the question is confidential.
Any questions submitted via email will remain confidential with all identifying information removed before the event.
Audience members will also have the opportunity to submit questions in writing at the event, in accordance with forum rules.
The forum is being held because the auditor/treasurer and recorder races will be contested on the primary election ballot on Tuesday, Aug. 12, when voters will narrow the field in these two races to the top two vote-getters for each office.
Voters will also be choosing their party’s nominee for from among several candidates in each party for US Senate, Governor, Secretary of State, State Auditor, and Attorney General.
Absentee voting is already underway at the Becker County Courthouse for those wishing to vote early.
Under a 2014 change in Minnesota law, voters do not need to provide any reason for voting prior to election day. Voters can also register to vote at the same time as they vote.
