'Canes best Angels
The Fergus Falls Hurricanes seems to have the Detroit Lakes Angels' number for the past few games between the teams.
Fergus Falls, a side that knocked the Angels out of last year's Class C state tournament and eventually made the semi's, took another from DL with a 7-5 win Wednesday night at Washington Ballpark.
The Hurricanes took advantage DL's defensive miscues in the first to get ahead and then scored three insurance runs in the eighth as Angels starter Chris Gilson ran out of gas.
Two errors by DL (10-7) in the first put runners on the corners for the Hurricanes. Pitcher Casey Kowalski helped his own cause with an RBI single that scored Nick Lewis.
Catcher Erik Rohlfs doubled to bring in Alex Conboy and Kowalski to take a 3-0 lead.
Gilson settled down and induced a couple of grounders to end the inning.
DL tried to get one of those runs back in its half of the first inning. Catcher Taylor Fuhs reached first on an error, and then stole second and third.
Fuhs noticed that Rohlfs wasn't paying much attention to him at third. He tried for home when centerfielder/co-manager Phil Kirchner struck out swinging for the second out.
It was a close play at home, but Rohlfs was quick enough to tag Fuhs on the bang-bang play to end the inning.
"I tried to take a chance," Fuhs said. "It was close. Oh well."
Both teams settled down from there with four straight inning of scoreless ball. Gilson allowed just four hits between the second and seventh inning.
Gilson scored the Angels' first run in the sixth. He reached on an error, which put him at second. Then Gilson stole third and came in to score after a wild pitch by Kowalski.
With two on, the Angels couldn't get another in after Phil Doll committed the third out after being caught trying to steal second.
Gilson eventually tired in the eighth after he allowed two runners on. Jon Tolbert came in and gave up an RBI single to Kowalski.
"Our defensive miscues did us in," Gilson said. "But I left some runs on the table."
Rohls and Jamie Jacklitch added RBI singles to put Fergus Falls up 6-1.
But the Angels rallied in the bottom of the eighth.
Jon Tolbert and Fuhs led off the frame with walks given up by Hurricanes reliever Matt Duenow. Kirchner singled in Tolbert from second with a line drive to right.
Doll singled to right to score Fuhs and Kirchner. Pinch hitter Zach Fullmer's timing was right with a single to center that scored Doll from second. Fullmer tried to stretch the play when he saw Fergus Falls try to make a play at the plate to try to get Kirchner out.
Rohls, though, made a play to Ben Brimhall, who tagged Fullmer easily.
The Angels managed to close the gap to 6-5 with the rally.
"We couldn't get enough at the end," Kirchner said.
Fergus Falls added an insurance run in the ninth. Brimhall reached first after Huberty committed his second error of the game. He scored after on a Kowalski sacrifice fly.
DL brought the tying run to the plate with a man on first in the bottom of the ninth. Fuhs hit a long ball to center, but it was an easy catch to end the game.
"We hung in there and hopefully will put things together down the stretch," Kirchner said.
Kowalski took the win in going seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out five. Gilson picked up the loss in seven innings of work, striking out seven.
The Angels played an alumni game, plus an interleague game against the Frazee Flames July 4 at home with results in Wednesday's Becker County Record.
DL returns to Hi-10 League play Wednesday night with a matchup against the Perham Pirates at 7:30 p.m. at Washington Ballpark.
