Car-semi crash sends two DL teens to hospital
Two Detroit Lakes teens went to the hospital by ambulance after a semi went through a yellow light and hit their vehicle Wednesday.
Cobain Donald Hayes, 18, and passenger Drew ray Zick, 14, were both taken to Essentia St. Mary’s Hospital by ambulance, with what was described as non-life threatening injuries.
The accident occurred about 7:48 a.m. on Highway 10 and Jackson Avenue, when a 2007 Model 600 Mack truck, eastbound on Highway 10, went through a yellow light.
The semi was driven by Kevin Allan Schmidt, 24, of Fergus Falls, who suffered no apparent injuries.
He said he braked and turned left to miss the other vehicle when it turned in front of him as the light turned.
But he was not able to avoid the collision, and the semi struck a 2001 Lincoln Navigator that was northbound on Jackson Avenue and had turned left onto Highway 10 when the traffic light turned green.
The semi driver said he knew the traffic light was yellow for him, but he thought he would have more time before it turned red.
The semi was going an estimated 40 mph and struck the SUV as it was turning, according to the police accident report.
