Carl Walter Budde was born the son of Walter and Jacqueline Budde on July 24, 1954 in Minneapolis. He grew up in Minneapolis, Bloomington, and Prior Lake, Minn., Greensboro, N.C., and Austin, Minn.
Carl graduated from Pacelli High School in Austin, Minn., in 1972 and then from Brown Institute, with a degree in electronics repair. He worked for years at Norman County Telephone in Ada, Minn. For the last 20 years he had worked for the State of Minnesota and the Department of Transportation as a communications specialist.
Carl was recently preceded in death by his companion of over 20 years, Mari Jo French, who died on Jan. 29, 2008. They had three children together: Sonja, Sylvia and Shannon. Carl was also heavily involved in the raising of Mari's three children from a prior relationship: Jodi Edin of Minot, N.D., and Jamie Chesley and Jennifer French of Bemidji. Carl was most proud of being called "Dad" by all his "girls."
Carl will be remembered for his love of his friends and family, in particular his daughters and the members of Mari Jo's family, who lived or regularly visited with him at their home in rural Blackduck. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and a ricing operation he ran with his close friend, Harold "Whitey" Annette. The ricing operation gave Carl an opportunity to demonstrate his remarkable ability to build all things mechanical and keep them running properly.
