Nov. 3, 1915-May 25, 2009
Carl V. Nilson, 93, of Osage, died on Monday, May 25, 2009 at the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga, where he had resided since January 2006.
Carl Nilson was born the son of Axel and Mary Nilson on Nov. 3, 1915 at the family farm in Ceresco, Neb. He attended the Ceresco School through grade 12, and played basketball in high school. He started raising hogs with his father while still in school. He met Arvilla Rabbass at a school dance and they were married on Nov. 10, 1940 at St. Mathews Church in Cedar Bluffs, Neb. Their first home was a farm near Ceresco, Neb.
In the spring of 1954, Carl and Arvilla moved their young family to a farm near Osage. They were blessed with seven children, of which five were born in Nebraska and two in Minnesota. They moved to Osage with intentions of becoming dairy farmers, later switching from dairy cows to raising Duroc hogs; showing and selling nationwide.
Give Carl a County Fair, State Fair or pig sale, and he couldn't have been happier. Carl also worked at the Osage Elementary School as a custodian and bus driver. Oh, the stories he could tell about all the "prairie kids" and their shenanigans! In his later years, during the summer months he took up gardening and winter months, playing cards and table games with family and friends.
Square dancing, bowling and family get togethers were among his favorite pastimes. Carl became friends with many residents and staff while residing at Green Pine Acres, and was loved for his story telling and quick wit.
Surviving Carl are seven children, Germund Carl (Sue) Nilson of Hudson, Wis., Jane Niskanen (Willie) of Milaca, Minn., Paul "Steve" (JoLynn) Nilson of Osage, Kathy Hoefs (Earl) of Park Rapids, Don (Loretta) Nilson, also of Park Rapids, Carla Haugaard (Kevin) of Forest Lake, Minn., and Karleen Gehrig of Andover, Minn.; 20 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
