Email

Aug. 8, 1918-July 27, 2011

Carol P. Berget Perry was born to Ivan and Eline (Vigen) Estenson in Kelliher, Minn., and grew up in Fergus Falls with her many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She later moved to Fargo, where she met her husband, Howard Berget, founder of Fargo Insurance Agency, with whom she had four children.

After Howard's untimely death at age 38, she met and married William J. Perry, M.D., moving to Ft. Meade, S.D. The household expanded there to include Dr. Perry's two children. After retirement, they moved to Rapid City, where Carol was active in her church and PEO.

For the past three years, she has been a resident of St. Andrew's Village retirement home in Mahotomedi, Minn., near two of her sons.

Carol will be remembered as a devoted and beloved mother, grandmother, cousin, and friend. She exhibited incredible grace and strength throughout her life. Although she said she didn't accomplish much in her life, those who knew her would heartily disagree. She managed to nurture and encourage, as well as educate six children, including a doctor, a lawyer, a musician, an artist, and a businessman.

She was a creative soul and found joy in the little things, such as finding the perfect card or gift for someone, preparing and presenting delicious meals (including her famous brown bread), and sharing life's joys and sorrows with her many, many friends.

She created a family vacation home to be shared by her loved ones on Big Floyd Lake near Detroit Lakes, full of treasures and memories. She sewed countless Halloween costumes for grandchildren, did quilting and needlepoint, shared a love of classical music, relished beautiful artworks, and delighted in hearing of the accomplishments and travels of her children and grandchildren. Carol was a unique and glorious woman in mind, body and spirit, who will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Carol passed away peacefully at The Pillars hospice home after a few weeks there. She is survived by daughter Pamela Mowery (Garry) of Columbia, Md.; sons, Bruce Berget (Margie) of Cape Coral, Fla., Paul Berget (Pamela) of Vadnais Heights, Minn., and Bill Berget (Helen) of White Bear Lake, Minn.; stepdaughter Kathryn Perry Ogston (Bill), of Lopez, Wash.; as well as nine grandchildren, numerous step-grandchildren, and five (soon to be seven) great grandchildren.

A celebration of the life of Carol Perry will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4 in Calvary Lutheran Church, 5711 Sheraton Lake Drive, Rapid City (www.calvaryrapidcity.org).

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts or donations may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church of Rapid City, or The Pillars Hospice Home, 6025 Upper 35th Street, Oakdale, MN 55128.
