Cecil Poss, 79, of Vergas, passed away on Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2009, at the Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Edinburg, Texas, only 15 days after being diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor.
Cecil was born to Herman and Adeline (Bunkowski) Poss on July 21, 1930, in Pelican Rapids. He took over the family farm and served in the Korean War from 1951-53, after which time he continued farming. He married Janice Sonnenberg on December 3, 1955 and they continued dairy farming until 1973. They later sold the farm and moved to Lake Lizzie and developed lake property and grain farmed on the side.
In 1995, Cecil and Kenny Lyden formed a partnership and developed lake property on Lakes Crystal and Franklin. They started traveling in 1974, and 12 years ago bought a place in Mission, Texas, where they spent the winter months.
Cecil was a past member on the Dunn Town Board, St. Paul's Lutheran Church Board, Farmers Elevator Board of Pelican Rapids, Park Region Co-op Board of Pelican Rapids, Vergas Investment Club, Vergas Lions Club, American Legion Club, and a lifetime member of VFW.
Surviving Cecil are his loving wife of 54 years, Janice Poss of Vergas; one loving daughter, LaVonne (Mark) Richards of Georgetown, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Diana Poss of Fargo; 10 grandchildren, Shane (Sheila) Poss of Vergas, Jordan (Jessica) Poss of Fergus Falls, Taji Poss (Matthew Goldenstein) of Fergus Falls, Andrea Houts (Nick Marts) of Moorhead, Lacey Richards of Denver, Colo., Bryan Houts of Moorhead, Mya Poss (Shawn Sampson) of Fergus Falls, MN, Gary Richards of Moorhead, Lyndsey Houts of Kansas City, Mo., and Shelby Richards of Gilbert, Ariz.; six great grandchildren, Avery, Tristan, Macie and Callie Poss, Aiden Striffler and Zavier Goldenstein; three sisters, Marjorie (Bob) Olson of Salina, Kansas, Jane (Earl) Trosvik of Pelican Rapids and Marion (Gary) Maxwell of Ottowa, Kansas; one brother, William (Elaine) Poss of Las Vegas, Nev.; along with many relatives and friends, both of Minnesota and Texas.
Preceding Cecil in death were his parents and his only son, Jerry.
Visitation for Cecil will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 1, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Vergas, and one hour prior to church services Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 2, in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Robert Hinkley officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery.
A memorial service for Cecil will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, January 24, at Green Gate Grove in Mission, Texas.
