Celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week
In 1903, the first National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), Pelican Island, was established by President Theodore Roosevelt to protect the brown pelican from exploitation.
Since then, over 550 additional refuges and 37 Wetland Management Districts (WMDs) have been established for migratory birds, marine mammals, threatened and endangered species, and other purposes.
