Charles I. Greene, 81, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes.
Charles Iver Greene was born to Ole and Isabelle (Brisbois) Greene on May 16, 1927 in Mahnomen, where he was raised and received his education at the local Catholic Church school. In 1941, he enlisted in the United States Navy and from 1943-47, served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War, at locations around the United States.
Charles was honorably discharged in 1947. After the service, he worked at various jobs before starting a life-long career with Hartman's in Detroit Lakes. Charles married Dorothy Ruth Jackson in Detroit Lakes. Dorothy passed away in 1991. Throughout his life Charles enjoyed harvesting wild rice, fishing, deer hunting, gardening and going to the casino. He loved his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They will always remember him for his storytelling and the time they spent together.
Charles will be remembered and deeply missed by his four sons, Charles "John" (Phyllis) Greene of Moorhead, Anthony Greene of Moorhead, David Greene of Detroit Lakes and Gary Greene, also of Detroit Lakes; his five daughters, Marilyn Ericson of Detroit Lakes, Lillian Lamblez of Dilworth, Pam Bellcourt of Detroit Lakes, Linda (Barry) Hjelsand of Frazee and Wanda Greene of Detroit Lakes; 23 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and one sister, Isabel Carlin of Spring Park, Minn.
Preceding Charles in death were his parents; wife Dorothy; one daughter, Debra Greene; one grandson, Cordell Bellcourt Jr.; brothers, Leo, Clarence, Rudolph, James, Harold, Gordon, Olaf and one infant brother; sisters, Dora Hoss, Alice Kobe, Ida Carlson, Carol Yerkes, Helen Bellecourt and Margaret Sargent.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8 at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes and will continue one hour prior to service at the church on Saturday. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at St. Columba Episcopal Church in White Earth, with interment at St. Columba Episcopal Cemetery.
