City, school filing opened Tuesday

For any Becker County residents interested in running for public office, now’s the time to file for that chance.

Filing opened Tuesday for candidates interested in getting their names on the ballots. Filing closes at 5 p.m. on Aug. 12, with the general election being held Nov. 4.

Around Becker County there are several seats open on both city councils and school boards.

Detroit Lakes School Board:

There are three school board seats open this time around, seats currently being held by David Langworthy, Brenda Muckenhirn and Glenn Gifford (vacated by Terri Boyd, who moved).

Filing fee is $2. The district office is located at 702 Lake Ave; office hours are Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to noon.

Frazee-Vergas School Board

There are four school board seats open here — seats currently held by Matt Bauer, Richard Ziegler, Ken Fett and James Nelson.

The filing fee is $2, and the district office is open from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Lake Park-Audubon School

Four seats of seven are open on the LP-A school board, which includes those held by Vicki Grondahl, Michael McIntire, Jeff Swetland and Rich Veit.  Filing fee is $2. The district office is located in the Lake Park High School with hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Friday 7:30 a.m. to noon.

Waubun-Ogema-White Earth School Board

There are also four school board seats open here. They are seats currently held by Stacy Bly, Christi Haverkamp, Mark Rothschadl and Jon Syverson. Filing fee is $2.

The district office, which is at the Waubun High School, is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

City of Detroit Lakes

Half of the 10-person Detroit Lakes City Council is up for election this year. The seats are held by Madalyn Sukke and Al Brevik, both aldermen-at-large; Dan Wenner, (first ward); Dave Aune (second ward); and G.L. Tucker (third ward).

Residents interested in filing for these seats can do so at the city administration building at 1025 Roosevelt Avenue (City Administration Building). There is a $5 filing fee.

City of Frazee

Two seats are open on the Frazee City Council, as well as the position of Frazee mayor.

Council seats currently filled by Bonnie Julius and Ken Miosek are up for grabs, both are four year terms.

The mayoral position, a two-year term, is currently held by Hank Ludtke, who has held the position for two terms, including 12 years on the city council.

The city office is located at 114 Lake St N, Frazee; office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Filing fee is $2.

City of Lake Park

There are two city council member seats open here.

Danny Aune and Kimberly Holloway are holding open seats that they took over for the interim this past year after Martin Pepper and Alicia Viergutz resigned from the council.

The seats are four-year terms; filing fee $2.

The city office is located at 2032 2nd Street in Lake Park. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

City of Audubon

Up for re-election on the five-person city council are Mayor Brad Grant and council members Carol Bergerson and Gary Bakken. The council seats are four-year terms and the mayor’s seat is for two years. Filing fee is $2.

The city office is located at 273 4th St., Audubon. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

City of Callaway:

In Callaway, Mayor Gretchen Stalboerger is up for election for a two-year term. Council members Charles Loreth and Cliff Bryngelson are up for election to four-year terms on the five-member city council.

The city office is located at 6 Dakota St, Callaway.

City of Waubun

In Waubun, the mayor and two city council positions will be on the ballot. Andrew Berg is the mayor and Jean Horack and Thomas Bement are the city council members whose terms are up.  Winners will serve four-year terms on the five-member city council. Filing fees are $2 for mayor and $1 for council positions.

City of Vergas

Two council positions and the mayor position are up for grabs in Vergas.

The two-year term of mayor there has been held by Dean Haarstick since 2001.

Also open are four-year term council seats held by Keith Bunkowske and Scott Goodman.

File at the city office, which is located in the municipal liquor store at 117 E Main St. in Vergas.

Hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Filing fee is $2.

City of Wolf Lake

Open in Wolf Lake is two city council seats and the mayor position.

Mayor Cornell Ylitalo has held his two year term twice, while seats held by John Aho and Nate Aho are also open.

File at the city office, located at 122 West Johnson Street. It is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Filing fee is $2.

City of Ogema

The treasurer position, a four year term, is open in Ogema.  The position is currently held by Franklin Rousu.

Two city council seats will also be on the ballot.

The four-year term positions are held by Mary Vaseka (interim) and Timothy Savior.

Filing fee is $2.
