Class C state amateur baseball: Belle Plaine eliminates Detroit Lakes 10-2
Ryan Diers picked up the victory and led last year's state runners-up, the Belle Plaine Tigers, at the plate in a 10-2 victory over Detroit Lakes Friday night at the Mini-Met.
The loss eliminates the Angels from the Minnesota Class C Amateur baseball tournament.
Detroit Lakes took a 1-0 lead on a RBI single from catcher Kirk McLeod in the first inning and held the lead for two innings before the Tigers scored nine unanswered runs, five in the third, three in the fourth and one run in the fifth inning to blow the game open 9-1.
Dan Huber hit a two-run double in the third to put the Tigers up 2-1. Diers' two-run single scored the game winner and gave Belle Plaine a 4-1 cushion.
McLeod picked up his second RBI of the game on a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning for DL's final run.
Diers notched the pitching victory throwing five innings, allowing one earned run on two hits. He walked six and fanned five.
Relievers Matt Pichelmann and Trevor Vaubel, draftees from Arlington and Gaylord, respectively, along with August Farruggia shut down the Angles allowing only two more hits in the final four frames.
Diers was 3-5 at the plate with a double and four RBIs. Brad Lawson and Huber both knocked in two runs.
All four Angels' hits came from the top four in the order: Chris Gilson, Phil Kirchner, Taylor Fuhs and McLeod - none for extra bases.
Bertha draftee Patrick Riewer took the loss allowing five earned runs on three hits in three innings on the mound. He struck out six and walked four batters.
Belle Plaine scored four runs off of Brock Johnson and one off of Mason Swegarden in relief.
50-year old Bertha draftee John Riewer pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Angels.
Belle Plaine advances to face the Sartell Muskies in a rematch of last year's championship game. The two teams play next Saturday, Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. in Belle Plaine.
In other action Friday night, the Howard Lake Orphans defeated the Montevideo Spartans 5-0 in Belle Plaine.
