Cleo Julia Hazel Phelps was born to Celmore and Hazel (Danialson) Phelps on December 12, 1927 in St. John, N.D. She graduated from Kensington High School with the class of 1945.

On April 17, 1948 she was united in marriage to Vernon W. Skramstad on the family farm in Kensington. They resided in Kensington, where Cleo worked

as an "egg candler." In 1958 they moved to Minneapolis. From 1960-1985 they lived in Blaine, Minn., and relocated to Detroit Lakes in the later part of 1985.

Cleo had a passion for reading. She was a fan of Harlequin romance novels and would often finish the entire book in one day. Cleo also enjoyed going camping. Verne and Cleo made many trips to Ten Mile Lake near Elbow Lake, Minn., for extended camping trips with family and friends. Time shared with family was always something Cleo looked forward

too. Cleo also adored animals. She cherished her pet dogs and cats throughout the years.

In 2010, Cleo entered Emmanuel Nursing Home, where she quickly made new friends. Her love for reading continued and the occasional game of bingo and going out to eat was always considered a treat.

Surviving Cleo are her sons, Vernon W. Jr. (Jacqueline) of Blaine and Mark (Stephanie) of Frazee; six grandchildren, including Jason (Jennifer) of St. Michael, Jeremy (Anne) of St. Cloud, Jennifer (Justin) Daas of North Branch, Minn., Jaime Skramstad and fiancée Christopher Carman of Blaine, Alysia Skramstad and Carianne Skramstad, both of Frazee; along with eight great grandchildren and one sister, Corlyce (Jerry) Grant of Fridley, Minn.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Verne (2007); and three sisters, Joanna Tangen, Laura Thompson and Eva Dahl.

Memorials may be directed to the Humane Society of the Lakes, 19665 U.S. Highway 59, Detroit Lakes, MN 56501.
