CLSC hosts youth pheasant hunt

September 26 was Take a Kid Hunting Day in Minnesota, and the Cormorant Lakes Sportsman's Club did just that -- times 25.

The sportsman's club once again sponsored a youth pheasant hunt, and took a group of 25 area kids hunting at Thompson Hunting Preserve in Barnesville. Interest in this year's event was so high, "we could've filled it up twice," said Greg Johnson, CLSC building manager and second vice president.

The club furnished everything short of a gun for the kids to hunt and shoot some clay pigeons -- including shells, the bus ride, the pheasants and a hot dog lunch at the club's meeting room south of Audubon. Several members also brought their dogs on the hunt, and according to Johnson, this may have been the first time some of the kids have hunted using a dog.

Meeting at the club for lunch also affords club safety officer Lorry Zaeske the chance to remind the hunters of a few important gun safety issues with pheasant hunting with dogs in a large group.

The sportsman's club pays for this and other events through its charitable gaming in the area. The club has been doing the pheasant hunting trip for 12 to 15 years, and also hosts a youth fishing trip in the spring.
