Comeback falls short for Detroit Lakes basketball
DETROIT LAKES - Battling back was the name of the game for the Detroit Lakes boys' basketball team Thursday night as they lost a back-and-forth game against the Bemidji Lumberjacks 74-70.
"The boys showed a lot of heart tonight," said head coach Robb Flint. "It's not an easy thing to battle back from 10 points and we did it three times."
The game took until the final buzzer to be decided after the DL boys battled back from 10 down with two minutes left to tie it up.
With 20 seconds left, Laker sophomore forward Josh Stalberger committed a foul, which sent Bemidji's Simon Anderson to the line.
The Lumberjacks doubled up the Lakers in three's, out-shooting them by a margin of 6-3.
After hitting both free throws, it gave the Lumberjacks a two-point lead. On the inbounds play the Lakers made a passing error that gave the Lumberjacks the ball back, which forced the Lakers to foul again.
"The boys' effort and execution were great tonight, we just needed to hit a few more shots," Flint said.
The Lakers were led in scoring by freshman Joe Mollberg, who dropped 22 points.
"I was just able to penetrate (the lane) and find the hoop," said Mollberg of his performance. "We had a lot of energy tonight and that gave us a chance to win."
Mollberg not only led the team in scoring -- but also free throws -- as he had five attempts and made all five.
"Joe has an amazing ability to attack the lane and shoot the mid-range jumper," Flint said about Mollberg. "The mid-range shot is really a lost art with kids today. If he keeps working hard he will be a very special player."
Bemidji was led in scoring by Czar Woods and Ryan Rude-- both with 16.
The Laker boys' next game will be Jan. 27, at home against Crosby-Ironton. At halftime of that game, there will be a free will offering for the Coaches vs. Cancer fund.
