Construction has begun on a new building for ice hockey lovers in Wadena.

Hammers Construction of Perham started work Monday on the arena.

Concrete work is being completed and steel arrives this week. Wadena Hockey Association officer Matt Lunde said he anticipates having ice on the rink by the first week of December.

The Wadena Hockey Association has more than 100 members. Youth league high school teams will rent the indoor facility from the Wadena Community Center Board.

Lunde said locker rooms will be provided for players but the association wants to keep costs down in the event Wadena receives funds from the state for a full-fledged community center to replace the one lost in the June 17, 2010 tornado.

"Our use of it may or may not be temporary," Lunde said.
