Aug. 24, 1913-Oct. 27, 2013
Corrine Louise Lawrence Airheart, 100, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 27, 2013 in Weslaco, Texas.
Corrine was born on August 24, 1913 in a Fergus Falls hospital, where her mother had been rushed by horse and buggy from the family's cottage on Loon Lake.
Her parents were Louise (Robbecke) Lawrence and Frank J. Lawrence. After the June 22, 1919 tornado which destroyed their Fergus Falls home, the Lawrence family moved to Fargo.
Corrine attended elementary, junior high and high school in Fargo, graduating from Fargo Central in 1931. While in high school she was a member of the Harlequin Dramatic Society and appeared in many plays.
She married her high school sweetheart, Paul Evans Airheart on March 7, 1936 in Fargo. The minister who joined them in marriage was Paul's father, Dr. Walter Lee Airheart.
Both Corrine and Paul were very active in The Fargo-Moorhead Community Theater, later the Herbst Theater, appearing on stage in many plays. When not in front of an audience they were backstage operating the lights or working on make-up.
After her two children were born, Corrine went back to college and obtained an associate's degree in education from what was then Moorhead State Teacher's College.
She began teaching kindergarten at the First Methodist Day School in Fargo and taught there for 25 years. She also taught Sunday school for 25 years at the First Methodist Church. She held a weekly story time at the public library for many years.
She was the leader for the same group of girls, which included her daughter, from Bluebirds to Camp Fire Girls and finally Horizon Club. When the girls graduated from high school, she filled the void by organizing and directing a "Worship in Motion" choir at First Methodist Church.
When she and Paul retired, they spent the summer months on Long Lake near Detroit Lakes, and the winter months in Weslaco. Corrine organized and directed worship in motion choirs in both places.
She loved to paint, and portraits were her specialty. She spent many hours doing portraits in oil and pastel during the summers.
Paul passed away in 1990 and Corrine continued to go between Long Lake and Weslaco. In 2003 she moved into a retirement center in Weslaco. She celebrated her 100th birthday there in August.
Survivors are her daughter, Lynn (Donald) Brandvold and son, Bruce (Providence) Airheart; four grandchildren, Evan (Linda) Brandvold, Beth (Darin) Wiese, Amy Airheart and Katie (Bear) Timmer; six great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
Interment will be beside her husband in Riverside Cemetery in Fargo. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
