It was a down-and-out pitchers’ brawl between Lake Park-Audubon’s Mason Swegarden and Mahnomen/Waubun’s Kody Lefebvre, as the two combined to strike out 29 in an eight-inning affair Thursday.

The strikeout-fest eventually went to the Cougars of M/W, but not after Lefebvre had 14 strikeouts and Swegarden 15.

The Cougars (7-5) were thwarted in the top of the eighth after third baseman Lane Ulmer made a saving defensive play after knocking down a line drive, fielding it cleanly and throwing out a Cougar runner who was attempting to score.

But it was short-lived, after Alex Teiken reached on an error, which led to a pair of bloop singles by Lefebvre and Jordan Spaeth to record the winning run.

Swegarden went all eight innings, allowing five hits, walking two, while registering his 15 strikeouts.

Lefebvre was just as effective, going the distance, allowing four hits, walk three and striking out 14.

LP-A also dropped their opening game of the day to Nevis 8-4.

The Raiders struck out 10 times in the game, while picking up eight hits. Nevis scored five runs in the second inning, which was aided by Raider errors.

“We had a defensive breakdown in the second inning, which led to five runs,” said LP-A head coach Sean Degerstrom.  “We only committed five errors coming into this game all season, and then we committed five in one game. Against a good team, you can’t do that.”

Mitchell Hall went 3-4 with two RBIs to lead the Raiders.
