Council approves five-year street plan

Wednesday evening the Detroit Lakes City Council approved a motion for a five-year capital improvement plan.

"This gives citizens a heads up" on upcoming projects," Mayor Larry Buboltz said.

There will be public hearings on each of the proposed street improvements prior to each project.

On the schedule for 2009 are Long Lake Phase 3, State Street (in front of the Fire Department because trucks bottom out getting out of the garage), North Industrial Park (nine lots in the industrial park because there are none left), and the Loring Avenue bridge replacement (which is paid for with state bonding because the state deemed it ready for replacement).

In 2010, the schedule includes North Washington Avenue, RDG Gateway Plan Phase 1 and the Highway 10 Beautification Grant.

Scheduled to take place in 2011 is Front Street/Oak Grove Avenue, State Street and alley. In 2012 is Tower Road final phase, and 2013 is Minnesota Avenue from Willow Street to State Street.

Also announced at the city council meeting:

-- Citizens are encouraged to meet from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday near the Pavilion to help Crush the Rush. Volunteers will help remove flowering rush from the city beach area. Bring old shoes and gloves to wear. Organizers are in the process of obtaining a DNR permit.

-- The city has agreed to allow the University of Minnesota do a carbon footprint of Detroit Lakes.

-- City Council will hold a special meeting tomorrow (Monday) at 5 p.m. to discuss several issues including the Lakes Crisis and Resource Center's request for land, an easement on the Central Market property and the adoption of the preliminary levy and budget.
