With spring and open water approaching fast, Becker County is moving forward on getting an aquatic invasive species expert on the job.

On Tuesday, the county board agreed to put out a request for qualifications, which will allow the county to negotiate with a firm or individual, once it’s been established they are qualified to do the job.

The county is hoping to partner with the City of Detroit Lakes or the Pelican River Watershed District on the position.

The Cormorant Watershed District, which is looking for a part-time administrator, decided not to accept a county proposal to hire a full time employee.

The employee would have spent two days of the workweek on watershed business and three days on county AIS business.

The county AIS Task Force met with commissioners at the County Board Tuesday. Most commissioners said they would prefer to keep the job a contract position. Task force members would like to see it become a full-time position.

The county has approved up to $50,000 in this year’s budget to help fight aquatic invasives.
